What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

IPC Media might distribute my magazine as they currently distribute, the worldwide NME, which is a music magazine. This means they could be willing to distribute my magazine as well, because my magazine appeals to a similar audience as NME does. However my magazine doesn't appeal to exactly the same audience as NME because my magazine is based on a very different genre of music. Therefore people who are interested in music in general will be attracted to both magazines, whereas people who are interested particularly hip-hop would read my magazine, whereas people who are particularly interested in Rock music would read NME. This widens IPC medias audience; therefore they will sell more magazines and make more money, which is why they might want to distribute my magazine. However IPC Media distribute magazines catering for a wide range of different audiences, which could make them feel as if they don’t need to distribute any more magazines because they might think they don’t need to.

A large media institution such as BBC Worldwide may not want to distribute my magazine, as they only want to deal with magazines that appeal to a wide audience individually as they don’t distribute magazines that aren’t yet successful on a large scale. They might feel like distributing smaller, less popular magazines would have a negative impact on their brand image. Also they might think it is too much of a risk to distribute a magazine that isn’t well known as it wouldn’t be as easy to sell as some of their others. As they don’t think they will sell as many, it may not make enough of a profit for it to be worth their time.

Bauer Media is another media institution that distributes popular, well-known magazines. This could once again make it unlikely for them to want to distribute a new magazine such as mine with little recognition. Because they might feel it would not make enough profit for it to be worth their time, compared to magazines such as ‘ZOO’ which they distribute, which is a much more well known magazine, however maybe it is not as well known as some magazines that BBC Worldwide distribute. This could mean that they might want to take on a slightly smaller magazine to broaden their market and appeal to a wider audience to sell more magazines.

Hearst Magazines UK is one of the largest media institutions, however, they describe themselves as ‘diversified’. This could mean they would be willing to take on a smaller magazine such as mine to distribute, to ‘diversify’ their audience as much as possible, because my magazine appeals to a very niche market, however, it doesn’t mean it cannot be sold to a lot of people who are just interested in music in general. If my magazine was to be distributed by Hearst Media UK, it is likely that it will gain a lot of recognition quickly, as they distribute to a lot of large companies that would promote my magazine providing they felt it was good enough.
