Double page spread essay

We looked at two double page spreads from the two magazines 'Q' and 'We Love Pop'
Q magazine has an audience of slightly older men into rock music, whereas We Love Pop has a target audience of teenage girls who listen to pop music.

We love pop has pictures of pop stars and is mainly pink. This is because it is what their target audience of teenage girls are interested in. The pop stars attract them and the pink colour sets the tone for the magazine and lets the readers know that the magazine is made for them. Q magazine has pictures of rock stars and is mainly red and white. Red is commonly associated with rock music and is commonly used with magazines of the same genre, such as NME. Q magazine has a lot more writing as it is designed for more sophisticated readers whereas We love Pop readers just want to find out a little bit of gossip and see pictures of their favourite pop stars.

They both have one or two quotes on them, this is because they are both music magazines and feature famous people. These quotes give a more personal feel to the magazine as if the celebrities are talking to the readers and it engages them so when they finnish reading it they feel like they know the celebrities. This definitely makes the We love pop readers buy the magazine because they are younger and they are more excited by celebrities. I didn't expect this from Q as i didn't think the more sophisticated readers would be as bothered about celebrities. However the interview with Q has a very relaxed and laid back feel which adds humour to the magazine and suggests the reader does enjoy the humour aspect of the magazine and are maybe not as sophisticated as i first suggested.

The pictures in We love pop are a mixture of studio shots and collage style pictures which look more childish to appeal to the younger audience. In Q magazine, the picture is an action shot and you can see they are heavilly tattoed and they are drinking, this is a more mature shot and may be considered unsuitable for the readers of We love pop. If We love pop had pictures like the one in Q then I don't think parents would be happy with their children buying it and probably wouldn't buy it for their children as they are too young to understand what i going on.
